Headfort School
Role:
Biography:
Headfort School offers co-educational, non-denominational, primary education for day and boarding children aged from 3 to 13. Montessori 3-7, ‘Prep’ 7-13. It has small classes (of 10-18, averaging 15) taught by subject specialists rather than class teachers. It provides the “Primary plus†core academic curriculum in the prep school: English, Maths, French, History, Geography, Science (in a fully equipped lab.), Religious Studies, Art and Design, Computing, Latin/Classics and Irish. There are dedicated facilities for Music, Theatre, Art and Design. Sports (on a daily basis) include: Rugby, Hockey, Cricket, Basketball and Softball/Rounders. Riding, Tennis, Golf and Swimming are optional extras. We have our own tennis courts, swimming pool, cross-country course and outdoor ménage.
Hockey at Headfort - We are one of the last schools in Ireland still playing our hockey on grass pitches - this naturally means that our opponents prefer to play at home rather than at Headfort (though they do like the big teas we serve after the matches!). Our girls play most of their hockey in the autumn term before Christmas, while the boys are busy with rugby. The boys play most of their hockey after Christmas. Most of our opponents tend to be the under-13 teams at secondary schools such as St Columba's College, The King's Hospital, Dundalk Grammar School, Drogheda Grammar School, Mercy Convent and St Michael's Loreto Convent in Navan and Mount Temple. We also play fixtures against prep schools such as Aravon and, occasionally, schools such as Rockport in Northern Ireland. The boys compete in the Leinster under-13 league.
